Born in Salamanca, Santiago Lurueña discovered his connection with the clarinet at the age of 5 at the Sirinx Music School. His musical training led him to study with Alfonso Pineda at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Badajoz and with Annelien van Wauwe at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen. He also expanded his studies in early music at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussels under Benjamin Dieltjens and Nicola Boud, and in chamber music the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin.
Santiago has performed at numerous chamber music festivals, including the X Festival de Música Contemporánea de Badajoz, the Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada, Aurora Chamber Music Festival, Wonderland Festival in Ghent, Klassiek op het Amstelveld, Mozart Festival in Bratislava, Schleswig Holstein Musik Festival, and the Encuentro y Academia de Santander, among others.
As a performer, he regularly collaborates with prominent orchestras and ensembles, such as Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, I Solisti del Vento, Hermes Ensemble, and Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra. He is also active in the field of early music.
Santiago has always been passionate about pushing the boundaries of classical music, exploring improvisation, diverse styles, and innovative concert formats. His creative approach has earned him first prize at the René Arons International Improvisation Competition in 2024 and a scholarship from AIE in 2021. Additionally, he has been a finalist in prestigious chamber music competitions such as the Storioni Concours, Big Little Music Competition, and Supernova Competition.
Currently, he maintains an active chamber music career with Rever Ensemble, a flexible chamber music group that explores repertoire for diverse formations, works regularly with Stegreif, the Improvising Orchestra and collaborates closely with pianist Orfeas Demis. Together, they share a special affinity for improvisation, jazz, and folk music.
